Psalm 20 Devotional

Here is the devotional for this week.

Psalm 20

“The Lord hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.” Psalm 20:1, 7

At a recent baby shower, someone asked if a name had been chosen for the new baby. The expectant mother replied that she had chosen three names she liked, but her husband didn’t like any of them. They still needed to agree on a name. Choosing a name is a big decision. Biblical names always carried a special meaning or said something about the person or their character. In investigating my family genealogy several years ago, I noticed that some names appeared over and over. Evidently, it was important to those people that those names be kept in our family—a tie from the past to the present. Whatever is chosen, it’s important, for that person will forever be known and called by the name he receives at birth.

So what’s in a name? As far as some people are concerned, not much. Some people dislike their given name so much they change it. But there is one name that never changes. The name of the God of Jacob. In that name there is great hope, strength and safety. The Psalmist writes: ‘the name of the God of Jacob defends us, sends us help, and strengthens us. He remembers our sacrifices, grants us the desires of our heart, and fulfills our plans. And it’s all done through His name.

Thought for Today: It’s encouraging to know that in an ever-changing world, there is one constant—the name of the God of Jacob.
